With his current release of Bounce That B / Waif Boy, we think it’s safe to say that we all want to know a little more about Funk Manchu. We recently got together with him to ask a few questions.
Where are you from, and what was it like growing up?
I was raised in Florida. Creativity and music were always a big part of my family growing up. My bro is a musician and producer in LA, my dad is an artist and mom a teacher. We were always encouraged to dream and use our imaginations.
When did you start making music?
Started making music around ’98-99 after taking an “electronic music” elective. Acquired up a Korg Triton and used it to sequence beats and it wasn’t long before I learned to integrate that sequencer with a traditional DAW.
What is your favorite type of song to play, and why?
I really like using repetition to establish a groove or vibe. Limiting an idea to 4-8 bars makes you really hone in on designing a sound that is visceral, impactful, and memorable. Then definitely surround it with funky shit.
What is your favorite kind of party?
Dark, dirty, and intimate.
What have you been up to in the past month?
Spending lots of time working on new material, trying to juice all the inspiration from MMW, and of course, doing Dad stuff.
